Treatment process combination
The Shafdan site is a long-established full-scale water reuse scheme. Secondary treated effluent is infiltrated into the aquifer via large basins. After 6-12 months in the aquifer it is reabstracted for irrigation purposes. Potential additional pre- and post-treatments will be demonstrated in pilot-scale including
- advanced oxidation processes (ozone, electro-pulse oxidation)
- BAC-CM (Biological Activated Carbon – Ceramic Membrane).
- short SAT (soil aquifer treatment)
Aims & ambition
The objective of the Shafdan pilot plant is to demonstrate the impact of newly integrated engineered – natural treatment process on the removal of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) that are hardly removed by conventional Soil Aquifer Treatment (cSAT). In the tested treatments, the target is to receive water quality suitable for indirect potable reuse or unrestricted irrigation. Enhanced pre-treatment shall also help increasing the hydraulic capacity of the infiltration system by decreasing the residence time in the soil-aquifer system.
